ADVANCING EQUALITY

While marriage equality is the law of the land, affirmed in Obergefell in June 2015, millions of LGBTQ Americans have no legal protections against discrimination, with regard to employment, public housing, or public accommodations. Federally, sexual orientation and gender identity or expression are not protected classes under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and at the state level, 28 states lack legal protections for LGBTQ Americans.

In Alabama, there are no state laws that offer legal protections for LGBTQ Alabamians in employment, public housing, or public accommodations. Further, no municipality in the state has passed a fully-inclusive LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinance.

Equality Shoals supports the passage of laws and ordinances, and the adoption of policies and procedures, that provide protections for the LGBTQ community, and treats them equally under the law, regardless of real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
